DDR4-2400Mhz RAM
21.5" & 27" models
The Mid 2017 thru 2018 Slim Screen i5 and i7 iMac models use special 260 pin Mac spec low voltage DDR4-2400 / PC4-19200 SODIMM type modules. These new iMac models have 4GB or 8GB installed from the factory.
The 27" models have 4 externally accessible expansion slots that can accept
up to 16GB each to max out at 64GB..Nice! The 21.5" machines on the other hand have 2 memory slots that are only accessible internally by removing the LCD display panel. Not for the meek but if willing and able you can get to 32GB in these newest 21.5" models. A quick outline of the 21.5" procedure can be found here.
With a full RAM load in these 27" Slim Screen machines we can do some serious
work without committing to a Mac Pro purchase. When loaded up, these new iMacs are very capable machines.

These 2.5Ghz , 2.7Ghz , 2.8Ghz , 2.93Ghz , 3.06Ghz , 3.1Ghz , 3.2Ghz , 3.4Ghz or 3.6Ghz models have 4GB installed from the factory. Most have 4 beautiful expansion slots that can accept up to 8GB each to max out at 32GB..Nice! The exceptions being all iMac11,2 models and the 3.2GHz models topping up at 16GB.
We can finally do some serious work without committing to a Mac Pro purchase. When loaded up, these are very capable Triple Channel DDR3 machines.

The Late 2009 iMac models use special 204 pin Mac spec DDR3-1066 (DDR3-1067) SODIMM type modules. These 2.66Ghz, 2.93Ghz, or 3.06Ghz models have either 2GB or 4GB installed from the factory. There are two memory expansion slots in the 20" and 24" models that can each address up to 4GB for a maximum of 8GB... The late 2009 21.5" and 27" screen models with i5 and i7 processors give us 4 beautiful expansion slots that can accept up to 4GB each to max out at 16GB..Nice! We can finally do some serious work without committing to a Mac Pro purchase. These are very capable Triple Channel DDR3 machines.

The 2008 Intel Core Duo powered iMac models have two memory expansion slots that use special 200 pin Mac spec DDR2-800 SODIMM type modules. The 2.4Ghz, 2.66Ghz, 2.8Ghz, or 3.06Ghz models have either 1GB or 2GB installed from the factory. There are two memory expansion slots and these models can address a full maximum of 6GB via one 2GB and one 4GB module.

The Early White and Aluminum Intel Core Duo / Core 2 Duo powered iMac models have two memory expansion slots that use special 200 pin Mac spec DIMM DDR2 type modules. The 1.83Ghz models come from the factory with 512MB installed, the 2.0Ghz and faster models have 1GB. There are two memory expansion slots that can address up to 1GB each in the 1.83Ghz machines with a maximum total potential being 2GB. The 2.0Ghz and faster Core Duo 2 models can expand up to 4GB maximum and the newest Aluminum models top out at a very nice 6GB!
